People always ask “what is a curated subscription?” because they are so used to book subscription services like The Book of the Month where you get a choice between a few books each month.
When we started our Curated Just For You Subscriptions, we mostly wanted to build a book community. There are so many pleasures the act of reading provides a reader- relaxation, transportation and inspiration. However once the nose comes out of the book, there is still more pleasure to be had, and that often comes from the book community-whether it is an online community as a whole or one you created for yourself online or in person.
Communities thrive on intimacy. Discussing a book can be incredibly intimate. Recommending a book is incredibly vulnerable, of course, adding to that intimacy.
But those conversations - here is a book I think you’d like, did you like and why- are what make us feel connected.
That is what we wanted to do with Recycle Read Repeat. First and most obvious, we just wanted to be around books. But then we really wanted to elevate the online discussions by suggesting books to people. And in order to do that we had to get to know them. That was fun. And by suggesting a book we are in return offering a piece of ourselves to them.
Relationships come in all shapes and forms, and this is one, that for us, has been so fulfilling.
We get slightly offended when people ask or assume we are using algorithms because we are the exact opposite. We really believe that what we do is create intimacy with other humans!
