Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver - This is an obvious Ang read. Not only do I love Kingsolver, but if something wins the Pulitzer Prize or a Booker Award, I'm on it. And Demon Copperhead won the Pulitzer this year and it also won the Women's Prize for Fiction. It is a retelling of Dickens' David Copperfield. It is a beautiful story filled with sadness and redemption and rich characters. And like most of Kingsolver's books, the setting is gorgeous and lush.
I’m reading 3 things currently:
I immediately started The Crane Husband after finishing When Women Were Dragons. I can't get enough of Kelly Barnhill right now. I don't usually enjoy teenage protagonists but the quality of her writing and ability to portray coming of age angst within a fantasy is impressive. I also listened to both books and the audio actors have been so good.
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I was really looking forward to this one but I don't think I can finish it. It feels very choppy and I'm not invested in the characters and their journey. I still love Silvia Moreno-Garcia and I can't wait to start her newest novel - Silver Nitrate. She is an incredibly talented writer who writes across so many genres. Jade and Shadow just wasn't my cup of tea.
Angela recently recommended Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison to me and so far I'm loving it. I haven't read much of Morrison's work (shhh don't tell anyone). I'm not sure why - her writing is just beautiful and I love magical realism and historical fiction. It's got it all!
