This is a memoir written by the ultrarunner Scott Jurek about his attempt to break the speed record for running the Appalachian Trail. The book alternates between Scott and his wife Jenny discussing the grueling work of running close to 50 miles every day on the trail. The author discusses why he wanted to run the AT, what he was thinking and feeling while running and the idea of why someone even attempts such a difficult physical and mental feat.
Dark Water Daughter by HM Long - a fantasy romance about a pirate hunter and a storm singer witch (her singing controls the weather). They’re on a quest to find her mom and this other evil pirate lord 🤣
Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross - historical fantasy & enemies to lovers is all I know so far!
Burning Questions by Margaret Atwood - collection of essays spanning topics and decades. You all know how much I love Atwood. Her essays are almost as good as her fiction. Reading this book makes me feel like I know her as a person a little bit more. This is a MUST read for any Atwood fan.
The London Seance Society by Sarah Penner - This book checks a lot of boxes for me - ghosts, occult, 19c. London, feminism, queer romance and mystery. I enjoyed her debut novel The Lost Apothecary but The London Seance Society is a much better story with deeply developed characters.
When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill - historical fantasy set in the 1950's when a large number of women simultaneously transformed into dragons. This is a fun feminist tale that explores the consequences of a mass uprising of women who've had enough of the status quo.
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski - I have no clue what it's about! I have been putting off reading it because it seems intimidating. One of our community partners suggested that we read it together so I’m going to read it with her. From what I understand so far, it is about a house that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. If I knew anything about Doctor Who I would make a reference to the TARDIS.
Elements of Style by William Strunk - This is actually a book that students get in college. The first half of it is all about punctuation and grammar. But the second Half of it is about style. I thought I would read that since I haven’t been really writing a lot and haven’t been thrilled with what I do write.
